Illustrations on resilience in 2040

I was recently commissioned to do some illustrations for a speculative publication that imagines what the future might look like in 2040 if community-building and low-impact living became the norm. The publication emerged from a course on resilience taught through a local organization called Resilient Sustainable Future Iowa City (RSFIC).

This project was a bit rushed because I was squeezing it in amid other client projects that I currently have in progress, but I really enjoyed working on it.

Last year, I proposed the theme, A Solarpunk Future of Iowa City for the Iowa City Press Co-op's collaborative calendar, because I had an interest in envisioning a more sustainable future based on reciprocity through the medium of visual art. This project felt so in alignment with that idea, and I think this is a theme I will return to over and over until I look outside and see these values reflected in my own neighborhood and communities.

I am grateful that this project found me and to live in a city with many like-minded people who are working to not just envision, but to enact the types of projects that bring people together to share resources and community. Wherever you are, my deepest wish is that you are surrounded by resilient community. Personally, I tend towards isolation, and this project was a good reminder for me to push through social discomfort and make an effort to connect with my neighbors.
